Post-Publication Discussion

JKPK — Post-Publication Discussion

Post-Publication Discussion

JKPK (Jurnal Kimia dan Pendidikan Kimia) is committed to fostering transparent, constructive, objective, and academically rigorous scholarly discussions concerning research articles published in the journal. Post-publication discussion constitutes an essential component of scientific communication by providing opportunities for readers, researchers, authors, and members of the academic community to critically evaluate published findings, examine methodological approaches, propose alternative interpretations, and contribute to the continuous advancement of scientific knowledge. Recognizing that scholarly evaluation extends beyond the formal peer-review process, JKPK encourages evidence-based discussions that promote scientific accountability, methodological transparency, and the reliability of published research.

This policy is informed by the principles and recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), particularly its guidance on Handling of Post-Publication Critiques. All post-publication comments and concerns will be evaluated according to their scientific relevance, supporting evidence, and potential implications for the integrity of the scholarly record.

Principles of Post-Publication Discussion

Post-publication discussions in JKPK are conducted in accordance with the principles of scientific objectivity, transparency, fairness, academic integrity, and mutual respect. All comments, criticisms, and responses are expected to contribute meaningfully to scientific understanding and to be supported by verifiable evidence, sound scientific reasoning, or relevant scholarly references. The journal recognizes that constructive disagreement and critical examination are fundamental to scientific progress; therefore, alternative interpretations and scientific criticisms are welcomed when supported by appropriate academic arguments.

Editorial consideration of post-publication discussions is based primarily on their scientific substance and evidentiary merit, irrespective of the academic standing, institutional affiliation, or professional background of the individuals involved. Authors whose published research is questioned are afforded a reasonable opportunity to respond, while the editorial team remains responsible for ensuring that discussions are conducted impartially, professionally, and consistently with established publication ethics standards.

Scope of Post-Publication Discussion

This policy applies to all original research articles published in JKPK, encompassing research in chemistry and chemistry education. Post-publication discussions may address, but are not limited to, the following aspects:

  1. Research Methodology: Questions or concerns regarding research designs, experimental procedures, educational research methods, research instruments, data collection techniques, or other methodological approaches employed in published studies.
  2. Data, Analysis, and Interpretation: Requests for clarification concerning reported research data, statistical or computational analyses, analytical procedures, and the interpretation of research findings.
  3. Errors and Inconsistencies: Identification of potential errors, discrepancies, or inconsistencies in published data, figures, tables, analytical results, calculations, or other scientific information.
  4. Alternative Interpretations: Scientifically justified alternative explanations or interpretations of published findings based on relevant theoretical perspectives, empirical evidence, or analytical considerations.
  5. Scientific Criticism: Evidence-based critical assessments of scientific arguments, methodological justifications, explanations, conclusions, or implications presented in published articles.
  6. New Scientific Evidence: Presentation of new research findings, relevant empirical evidence, or subsequent scientific developments that may support, refine, challenge, or extend previously published research.
  7. Research and Publication Integrity Concerns: Concerns regarding the reliability, transparency, or ethical integrity of published research, including suspected plagiarism, data fabrication, falsification, inappropriate manipulation, reporting errors, or other potential violations of research and publication ethics.

All discussions must focus on substantive scientific matters and be supported by appropriate evidence or scholarly arguments. Concerns involving potential research or publication misconduct will be addressed in accordance with JKPK's established Allegations of Research Misconduct policy.

Forms of Post-Publication Discussion

JKPK facilitates post-publication discussions primarily through formal correspondence with the editorial office. Such discussions may take the form of scientific comments, methodological critiques, requests for clarification, alternative interpretations, or evidence-based concerns regarding previously published research. These communications are considered part of the journal's post-publication editorial responsibilities and do not constitute independent manuscript categories, consistent with JKPK's policy of accepting original research articles.

Depending on the scientific significance and nature of the issues raised, the editorial team may facilitate communication between concerned parties, request clarification from the original authors, consult independent scientific experts, or consider an appropriate editorial statement or notice. The journal reserves the right to determine the most suitable mechanism for addressing each discussion based on its scientific relevance, evidentiary support, and implications for the published research.

Submission of Post-Publication Comments and Critiques

Individuals wishing to initiate a post-publication discussion should submit their comments or concerns to the JKPK Editorial Office at jkpk@fkip.uns.ac.id. Submissions should clearly identify the article concerned, including its title, authors, publication year, and DOI or permanent URL, accompanied by a sufficiently detailed explanation of the scientific issues requiring clarification or evaluation. Where applicable, comments should refer to specific sections, datasets, methodological procedures, analytical results, figures, tables, or conclusions and be supported by relevant scientific evidence or scholarly references.

Contributors are encouraged to provide their names, institutional affiliations, contact information, and any relevant conflicts of interest to facilitate transparent communication and appropriate editorial assessment. Anonymous submissions may nevertheless be considered when they contain sufficiently specific, credible, and verifiable information, particularly when the concerns relate to the reliability or integrity of published research. The editorial office may request additional documentation or clarification when the submitted information is insufficient to support a meaningful scientific evaluation.

All submitted comments must be expressed in professional academic language and should focus on the scientific substance of the published work rather than personal criticism of the authors or other individuals involved.

Initial Editorial Assessment

All post-publication comments and critiques received by JKPK are subject to an initial assessment by the Editor-in-Chief or designated members of the editorial team. This assessment determines whether the issues raised are relevant to the published article, supported by reasonable scientific arguments or evidence, and sufficiently significant to warrant further editorial consideration. Particular attention is given to the clarity of the concerns, their methodological or scientific implications, the credibility of supporting documentation, and their potential influence on the interpretation or reliability of published findings.

The editorial team may also consider whether similar concerns have been previously addressed, whether the critique contributes meaningful scientific information, and whether independent expert assessment is necessary. Submissions that lack sufficient scientific justification, fall outside the scope of scholarly discussion, or violate professional communication standards may be declined with an appropriate explanation. However, substantive criticisms will not be dismissed solely because they challenge the conclusions of published research or express disagreement with the original authors.

Authors' Right to Respond

When a post-publication critique raises substantive questions concerning a published article, JKPK may invite the corresponding author or other relevant co-authors to provide a written response. Authors are expected to address the scientific issues raised in a clear, objective, and evidence-based manner, including appropriate explanations of research methods, analytical procedures, supporting data, or the interpretation of findings. Where necessary, the editorial team may request additional documentation or clarification to facilitate a comprehensive assessment of the concerns.

Authors will be afforded a reasonable opportunity to prepare their responses, taking into account the complexity and significance of the issues under consideration. Responses must remain focused on scientific arguments and should not contain personal attacks or unsupported allegations against the individuals submitting the critique. The absence of an author response does not automatically establish the validity of a criticism or allegation, nor does it prevent the journal from conducting further evaluation when sufficient evidence is available. The editorial team will consider the available explanations and supporting evidence from all relevant parties before determining an appropriate course of action.

Independent Scientific Assessment

JKPK may seek independent scientific assessment when post-publication discussions involve complex methodological questions, disputed analytical interpretations, inconsistencies in reported results, or other scientific issues requiring specialized expertise. Qualified independent reviewers or subject-matter experts may be invited to evaluate the validity of the concerns, examine relevant supporting materials, and assess the adequacy of the authors' explanations.

Such assessments are intended to support informed editorial decision-making and do not necessarily constitute a repetition of the original peer-review process. Experts involved in the assessment must maintain impartiality, confidentiality, and professional integrity while disclosing any circumstances that could compromise their independence. The editorial team remains responsible for evaluating the evidence and determining whether the scientific concerns have been adequately resolved or require further investigation or corrective action.

Outcomes of Post-Publication Discussion

Following the evaluation of post-publication comments or critiques, JKPK may determine appropriate editorial actions based on the nature, scientific significance, supporting evidence, and severity of the issues identified. Not all post-publication discussions require a formal correction or public editorial notice. Possible outcomes include:

  1. No Further Action: The editorial team may conclude the assessment without additional action when the concerns are scientifically unsubstantiated, insufficiently supported by evidence, or adequately resolved through existing information or clarification. The decision may be communicated to the concerned parties with an appropriate explanation.
  2. Scientific Clarification or Editorial Communication: When additional explanation is necessary to improve the understanding of a published article, JKPK may request clarification from the original authors or facilitate communication between the relevant parties. Where the clarification is considered important for readers, the journal may issue an appropriate editorial communication or public clarification without altering the principal findings of the original publication.
  3. Correction: JKPK may publish a formal correction when identifiable errors are found in a published article but the principal findings and conclusions remain substantially reliable. Such errors may involve data presentation, calculations, figures, tables, methodological descriptions, or other aspects of the publication. Corrections will be clearly identified and, where technically feasible, linked to the original article.
  4. Expression of Concern: An expression of concern may be issued when credible and serious questions arise regarding the reliability or integrity of a published article, but the available evidence is insufficient to support a definitive editorial decision or an investigation remains unresolved. This notice serves to inform readers of the concerns without prematurely determining that misconduct has occurred or that the findings are invalid.
  5. Further Investigation: When the issues raised require additional scientific verification or formal examination, the editorial team may request supporting data, seek independent expert assessment, consult the authors, or refer the matter to the relevant research institution. The journal may consider further editorial action based on the findings of the investigation and the implications for the reliability of the published work.
  6. Retraction: JKPK may retract a published article when reliable evidence demonstrates that its findings or conclusions are substantially unreliable, including situations involving major analytical errors, data fabrication or falsification, serious methodological problems, or other circumstances that substantially undermine the integrity of the publication. Retraction decisions will be made in accordance with the journal's applicable publication ethics policies and the COPE Retraction Guidelines. Retraction notices will clearly identify the affected article, explain the reasons for retraction, and remain accessible as part of the scholarly record.

Editorial actions will be proportionate to the seriousness of the issues identified and guided by the need to preserve the accuracy, transparency, and reliability of the scientific literature. The purpose of corrective action is to maintain the integrity of the published record rather than to impose disciplinary sanctions on researchers. Formal corrections, expressions of concern, and retractions will be managed in accordance with the journal's Corrections and Retractions policy.

Handling of Research Integrity Concerns

Post-publication discussions that reveal indications of potential research or publication misconduct will be addressed through JKPK's established Allegations of Research Misconduct policy. Such concerns may involve plagiarism, fabrication or falsification of research data, inappropriate manipulation of images or analytical results, unethical research practices, authorship irregularities, peer-review manipulation, or other violations affecting the integrity of the published scientific record.

The editorial team will distinguish between legitimate differences in scientific interpretation, unintentional research or reporting errors, and allegations requiring formal investigation. Where credible evidence suggests possible misconduct, the journal may conduct a preliminary assessment, request relevant documentation, seek clarification from the individuals concerned, consult independent experts, or communicate with the appropriate research institution. Formal determinations of research misconduct may fall within the responsibilities of relevant institutions, while JKPK retains editorial responsibility for determining appropriate actions concerning articles published in the journal. All decisions will be based on available evidence and applicable publication ethics standards rather than unsupported allegations or personal disagreements.

Standards of Professional Conduct

All individuals participating in post-publication discussions are expected to maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct, academic integrity, and mutual respect. Scientific criticism should focus on research methods, evidence, interpretations, and conclusions rather than the personal characteristics, institutional affiliations, or professional reputations of the individuals involved. JKPK does not permit harassment, intimidation, discriminatory expressions, defamatory statements, deliberate misrepresentation of scientific evidence, or unauthorized disclosure of confidential information during the discussion process.

The editorial team may decline, moderate, or discontinue communications that are abusive, repeatedly submitted without substantive new evidence, or otherwise inconsistent with responsible scholarly communication. These measures are intended to maintain a constructive academic environment in which legitimate scientific disagreements can be evaluated fairly without compromising editorial independence or professional standards.

Conflicts of Interest

Individuals involved in submitting, reviewing, responding to, or making decisions concerning post-publication discussions are expected to disclose relevant financial, institutional, professional, or personal relationships that could reasonably influence their participation or judgment. The presence of a conflict of interest does not necessarily invalidate the scientific merits of a submitted critique; however, such information will be considered when evaluating the independence and credibility of the parties involved.

Editors and independent experts with conflicts of interest that could compromise impartial evaluation must refrain from participating in the relevant assessment or decision-making process. When appropriate, responsibility for handling the discussion may be transferred to another qualified editor or independent expert to safeguard editorial independence and maintain confidence in the integrity of the assessment.

Transparency and Integrity of the Scholarly Record

JKPK recognizes that transparency in post-publication evaluation is essential to maintaining confidence in scholarly communication. When a discussion results in a formal editorial clarification, correction, expression of concern, or retraction, the journal will provide an appropriately identified notice explaining the nature of the issue and the editorial action taken. Where technically feasible, such notices will be linked to the original published article to ensure that readers can identify relevant developments or concerns affecting the publication.

Editorial notices should provide sufficient information to explain the scientific or ethical basis of the decision while respecting legitimate confidentiality obligations and the rights of the individuals involved. Published notices and associated records will be maintained in accordance with applicable editorial and publication ethics standards. These measures are intended to preserve the accessibility, accuracy, and reliability of the scholarly record while ensuring that readers are appropriately informed of significant post-publication developments.

Timing and Continuity of Post-Publication Discussion

JKPK considers post-publication comments and critiques according to their scientific relevance and evidentiary significance, irrespective of the time elapsed since the original article was published. Concerns that materially affect the accuracy, interpretation, or integrity of published findings may warrant editorial attention even when raised several years after publication. The editorial team will endeavor to assess submitted concerns and communicate relevant developments within a reasonable timeframe, although the duration of the process may vary depending on the complexity of the issues, availability of supporting evidence, need for independent expert assessment, and involvement of external institutions.

Previously examined concerns may be reconsidered when substantial new scientific evidence or previously unavailable information becomes available. This approach acknowledges that published research remains subject to critical scientific evaluation and that the reliability of scholarly knowledge must be maintained throughout the lifetime of the publication.

Editorial Responsibility and Decision-Making

The Editor-in-Chief and designated editorial team have primary responsibility for coordinating post-publication discussions, assessing scientific concerns, facilitating communication among relevant parties, and determining appropriate editorial outcomes. Editorial decisions will be guided by the scientific merits of the available evidence, principles of procedural fairness, editorial independence, and recognized publication ethics standards.

Where concerns involve an editor or another individual whose participation could compromise impartiality, the matter will be referred to an appropriate alternative editor or independent party. The journal may seek additional scientific or institutional advice when necessary, particularly in cases involving disputed evidence, complex methodological concerns, or possible research misconduct. Final decisions regarding the published record remain within the journal's editorial authority, while formal investigations or determinations of research misconduct may be undertaken by the relevant research institutions.

Policy Review and Continuous Improvement

JKPK is committed to periodically reviewing and updating its post-publication discussion policy to reflect developments in scholarly communication, editorial practices, research integrity, and international publication ethics standards. Policy revisions may consider recommendations from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), emerging challenges in scientific publishing, and relevant experiences arising from editorial evaluations and post-publication assessments.

Through the implementation of this policy, JKPK seeks to strengthen scientific accountability, promote constructive intellectual exchange, safeguard the rights of authors and readers, and maintain the credibility, transparency, and reliability of research published in the journal.
