Abstract

This research aims to explore the impact of interpersonal communication skills, leadership capability, leadership adaptability, and leadership excellence on managerial competence and perceived leadership performance in maritime vocational higher educations. This study is motivated by the suboptimal leadership in maritime vocational higher educations. Additionally, research on leadership performance, particularly in maritime vocational vocational higher educations, is still limited. The study employs a quantitative approach and is causal in nature. Data were collected through questionnaires involving lecturers at maritime vocational higher educations across Indonesia. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling, based on specific criteria. A total of 145 lecturers participated in the study as respondents. The collected data were analyzed using SEM PLS statistical techniques to determine the path coefficients and the significance of the influence between variables. The results show that interpersonal communication skills have a significant effect on perceived leadership performance but not on managerial competence. Conversely, leadership adaptability significantly affects both managerial competence and perceived leadership performance. Leadership excellence also has a significant impact on both variables, while leadership capability does not show a significant effect on managerial competence or perceived leadership performance. The study also finds that managerial competence does not mediate the relationships between leadership capability, leadership adaptability, interpersonal communication skills, and leadership excellence with perceived leadership performance. The implications of this study highlight the importance of developing interpersonal communication skills, adaptability, and leadership excellence for maritime vocational higher educations leaders to enhance their managerial competence and positively influence perceptions of their leadership performance. Practical recommendations include leadership training programs focusing on these areas to prepare more effective and adaptive leaders in facing challenges in the maritime polytechnic education environment.
