Abstract

Lignocellulosic biomass derived from organic waste has significant potential as a renewable energy source; however, its high moisture content remains a major constraint in its conversion into solid fuel. Biodrying is a biological drying method that utilizes microbial aerobic oxidation reactions to generate heat (bioheat), thereby accelerating moisture evaporation without substantial external energy input. This review article evaluates the integration of microbiological mechanisms and process engineering within the Technology for Waste Processing at Source (TWPS) system using Local Microorganisms (LMO). Based on a systematic synthesis of the literature, biodrying has been shown to reduce moisture content to below 20% (as low as 5% when specific LMO inoculants are applied) while increasing the calorific value to approximately 3,500 kcal/kg, meeting the requirements of SNI 8966:2021. The key findings indicate that carbohydrate degradation is the primary contributor to bioheat generation, whereas the use of LMOs derived from locally available waste materials offers greater economic efficiency compared with commercial inoculants. These transformations strengthen the valorization of tropical biomass and support the implementation of a sustainable circular economy framework.
