Ruang Publik di Praja Mangkunegaran Masa Mangkunegara VII

Abstract

This research aims to analyze: (1) The development of public spaces in Praja Mangkunegaran during the reign of Mangkunegara VII (2) Community activities in public spaces in the Praja Mangkunegaran area during the reign of Mangkunegara VII. This research uses the historical method or historical method which has four steps, including the stages of heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The data used in the research were collected using literature study techniques that used archives obtained from the Mangkunegaran Reksa Pustaka Library, newspapers, magazines, journal articles, and books. The data analysis process was carried out by conducting internal and external criticism on the sources that had been found. The interpretation process is carried out by interpreting and integrating data sources and arranged chronologically. The historiography process is the stage of writing events chronologically according to the data sources found and compiled using proper language.
The conclusions obtained from the research results are: (1) The existence of public space in Praja Mangkunegaran especially during the reign of Mangkunegara VII, was influenced by modernization by maintaining the concept of "mimicry" in order to reduce the dominance of the colonizers. Public spaces in Praja Mangkunegaran also originated from private spaces which then turned into public spaces so that the general public could use them for various activities; (2) Ethical politics that occurred in Praja Mangkunegaran became a contributing factor to the existence of public spaces in Praja Mangkunegaran because it created native elites who upheld nationalism so that many discussions and congresses took place in public spaces. Public activities that can be found in the public spaces of Praja Mangkunegaran include ceremonial events, political activities, and cultural activities.
