Abstract

This study aims to analyze learning styles in exploring the problem-solving abilities of fifth-grade elementary school students on the topic of light properties. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach conducted at one of the public elementary schools in Kebumen District, Central Java. Data collection included a learning style diagnostic test, problem-solving questions based on Polya's indicators, and interviews with students and teachers. Data analysis referred to the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The results showed that of eighteen students, six had a visual learning style, five auditory, and seven kinesthetic. Each group had different strengths and weaknesses at each Polya stage. Visual students excelled at the stages of carrying out the plan and looking back, auditory students excelled at the stage of understanding the problem, while kinesthetic students excelled at the stages of devising and carrying out the plan. These findings confirm that no single learning style is comprehensively superior across all problem-solving stages, thus differentiated learning approaches responsive to students' learning styles are needed to explore problem-solving abilities and improve the quality of science learning in elementary schools.
