Abstract

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has introduced various innovations to the field of education, notably through chatbot-based technologies such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini. University students are increasingly utilizing AI chatbots to access information, comprehend course material, locate references, and assist with academic assignments. However, the relationship between the frequency of AI chatbot usage and students' academic achievement remains under-researched, particularly among students in education-related degree programs. This study aims to examine the relationship between the frequency of AI chatbot usage and the academic achievement of students in the Primary School Teacher Education (PGSD) program at Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta (Class of 2023). A quantitative approach utilizing a correlational method was employed. The sample consisted of 133 students selected via purposive sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire regarding AI chatbot usage frequency and documentation of Semester Grade Point Averages (IPS). Data analysis was conducted using the Spearman Rank correlation test, as one of the research variables did not follow a normal distribution. The results indicate a positive and significant relationship between the frequency of AI chatbot usage and students' academic achievement (ρ = 0.239; p = 0.006); however, the strength of this relationship falls into the "weak" category. These findings suggest that while AI chatbots can serve as a tool to support learning, they are not the sole factor associated with students' academic achievement.
