Penerapan Model Problem Based Learning Berbantuan Media Manipulatif untuk Meningkatkan Kemampuan Pemecahan Masalah Matematis

Abstract

The weak mathematical problem-solving skills of elementary school students are one of the obstacles in the mathematics learning process, particularly when solving word problems involving area and volume. The purpose of this study was to describe the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning model using manipulatives to develop the mathematical problem-solving skills of fourth-grade students at Majenang 2 Public Elementary School. This study was a classroom action research project involving 23 students over two cycles. Each cycle included planning, implementation, observation, and evaluation. Data were collected through observation, interviews, tests, and documentation, and were subsequently analyzed using descriptive qualitative and quantitative methods. Previous findings have demonstrated that implementing PBL supported by manipulative media by orienting students toward problems, organizing students for learning, guiding individual and group investigations, developing and presenting results, and analyzing and evaluating the problem-solving process can improve students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities. Classical mastery rates increased from 47.82% in the pre-intervention phase to 65.21% in Cycle I and 95.65% in Cycle II, while average scores rose from 63.90 to 75.64 and 86.62. These findings indicate that PBL supported by manipulative media can serve as an effective alternative teaching method for improving mathematical problem-solving skills.
