Abstract

Empathy is a key educational competency that fosters social cohesion and helps address bullying and intolerance. However, this ability remains underdeveloped among students, as evidenced by discrimination, individualism, and a lack of respect for diversity. This study aims to examine the relationship between historical empathy and social empathy, focusing on their cognitive and affective dimensions. The study involved 1,000 students in grades 10 and 11 from 13 public high schools. Data were collected using an instrument based on the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Historical empathy was assessed through perspective-taking, contextualization, and affective connection, while social empathy was associated with empathic concern, perspective-taking, personal distress, and fantasy. The results reveal a strong correlation, with a path coefficient (β) of 0.831 and an R² value of 0.690, indicating that historical empathy explains 69% of the variation in social empathy. Perspective-taking emerged as the most influential factor, with a factor loading of 0.825. The cognitive and affective dimensions of historical empathy encourage students to engage in prosocial behavior and adopt tolerant attitudes. Therefore, developing historical empathy is crucial for fostering tolerance and prosocial behavior among students. These findings are expected to assist educators and policymakers in designing curricula that instill historical empathy. Future research should evaluate additional variables and the effectiveness of historical empathy-based interventions across diverse cultural and educational contexts.
