Abstract

Chinese communities in various cities in Indonesia generally occupy Chinatown areas, including in the city of Tangerang, which is known for its Benteng Chinese community, a group of Chinese peranakans who live around the Cisadane River. One of the efforts to preserve the history and culture of this community is through the Benteng Heritage Museum, which was founded on the initiative of Udaya Halim. This study aims to examine the role of the Benteng Heritage Museum in preserving the history and culture of the Chinese Benteng community in the Old Market area of Tangerang. This study uses the theory of museum function according to the International Council of Museums (ICOM), which positions museums as institutions that play a role in collecting, caring for, researching, and communicating cultural heritage to the public. The method used is the historical method. As explained by Kuntowijoyo (2005), the historical method involves several stages, namely theme selection, heuristics (source collection), source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. These stages form the main framework of this study, which involves direct observation at the museum, interviews with one of the museum educators, and a literature review to obtain secondary data on the history and culture of the Chinese in Tangerang. The results show that the Benteng Heritage Museum has a collection of artifacts, photographs, and documents that record the history of the Chinese community in Benteng. In addition to serving as a place to store historical collections, this museum also serves as a means of education for the community to understand the identity and cultural traditions of the Benteng Chinese community. The religious ceremonies and life cycle traditions of the Benteng Chinese community in the Old Market area demonstrate the continuity of cultural values that have been passed down from generation to generation. Thus, the Benteng Heritage Museum plays an important role as an institution for preserving the history and culture of the Benteng Chinese community in Tangerang.
