Abstract

The ability to understand the concept of multiplication basically comes from the concept of addition which is done repeatedly, but in the process it is found that many applications of learning multiplication tend to be rote rather than understanding the multiplication concept itself. This has led to a lot of stigma that operating multiplication arithmetic operations is more difficult than other arithmetic operations. This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach that aims to describe the ability to understand the multiplication concept of students in learning mathematics. The research subjects were class III students at SD Negeri 2 Kalangsari. The determination of the subject was carried out using a purposive sampling technique with a sample of 15 students, then the 6 selected students were subjected to written tests and interviews. The data analysis technique in this study was to use student test sheets related to understanding the concept of multiplication and multiplication material in layers of elementary school students, then interviews were conducted with 6 students and class III teachers.
