The Development of an Interactive Pop-Up Book to Support Literacy and Numeracy Skills in Children Aged 5-6 Years

Abstract

Literacy and numeracy skills are important basic competencies to be developed in children aged 5–6 years. However, literacy and numeracy learning still requires media that is interesting, interactive, and appropriate to the characteristics of early childhood. This study aims to develop interactive pop-up book media that is valid, practical, and effective to improve literacy and numeracy skills in children aged 5–6 years. The study used the Research and Development (R&D) method with a mixed method approach through the ADDIE model which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through observation, interviews, expert validation questionnaires, and assessment of literacy and numeracy skills before and after media use. Data were analyzed quantitatively using the percentage of feasibility and comparison of pretest and posttest results, and qualitatively through descriptive analysis. The results showed that the media feasibility was 90% from material experts, 89% from language experts, and 90% from media experts. Literacy skills increased from 60% to 82%, while numeracy increased from 58% to 80%. Thus, interactive pop-up books can be a suitable alternative learning media to support the development of literacy and numeracy in early childhood.
