Optimalisasi Hasil Belajar Kognitif IPA SD melalui Experiential Learning Berbasis Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)

Abstract

The low mastery of science concepts and cognitive learning outcomes among elementary school students remains a challenge that requires attention. Data from the 2024 Education Report indicate that literacy and numeracy achievement has not yet fully reached the expected competencies, highlighting the need to improve students’ cognitive abilities. This condition is further supported by field findings showing that science learning still predominantly relies on lecture-based methods, resulting in limited student engagement and difficulties in mastering abstract concepts. This study aims to examine the effect of the NGSS-based Experiential Learning model on students’ cognitive learning outcomes in science. The study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, involving an experimental class that received NGSS-based Experiential Learning instruction and a control class that received conventional instruction. The results showed that the NGSS-based Experiential Learning model had a significant effect on students’ cognitive learning outcomes in science, as indicated by a significance value of 0.001 (<0.05), an effect size of 0.944 (large effect), and an N-Gain score of 0.41 (medium category) in the experimental class, which was higher than that of the control class. Therefore, the implementation of the NGSS-based Experiential Learning model had a significant effect on improving students’ cognitive learning outcomes while supporting the development of deeper and more meaningful conceptual understanding.
