A Conceptual Solar-Driven Eco-Drainage Framework for Coastal Housing Resilience Against Saline-Induced Deterioration

Abstract

This conceptual study develops a solar-driven eco-drainage framework for coastal housing resilience against saline-induced deterioration in Indonesian tidal settlements, using a case-based qualitative approach in West Pentadu Village, Gorontalo. Recurrent tidal flooding contributes to saline-induced decay of residential buildings through capillary absorption and salt crystallization. Conventional drainage measures often fail to remove prolonged saline stagnation around foundations and lower walls. Field observation and architectural vulnerability assessment indicate that spring-tide inundation may reach 25–33 cm and stagnate for three to five days, coinciding with masonry spalling and efflorescence. The proposed framework integrates green-blue infrastructure, eco-drainage channels, infiltration wells, mangrove buffers, and solar-powered pumping to accelerate tidal water diversion. Conceptually, it aims to reduce saline exposure duration, limit salt migration, and slow material deterioration while strengthening community adaptive capacity through ecological infrastructure, renewable energy, and architectural adaptation. Quantitative validation remains required for future research
