Abstract

Abstract:  Interference occurs when there is an intrusion of one’s language elements into other languages production which causes errors in the language production. Fundamentally, interference occurs due to a contact between two languages which causes the speaker's knowledge to overlap between one another. Interference not only occurs in oral language production but also written language production. One of the important aspects in written language is spelling. For English language learners, spelling English words is challenging since the phoneme doesn’t correspond to the graphemes. This research aims at exploring spelling interference as well as finding the reason for the interference and discovering the solution to tackle the errors. The data was collected by assigning 50 Javanese children aged 14-15 years to write an English narrative text entitled “Cinderella” and classified using the OSIT classification. The participants were also interviewed in drawing the conclusion. The findings show that the interference occurs due to (1) phonological-based problems and (2) long-winded spelling. In tackling these challenges, the teacher could employ "Spell & Pronounce'' practice every morning before the class begins. By employing this method, the habit-formation could be built within the mental image of the children as well as enrich the English glossary in children's memory.
