Analysis of Pedestrian Accessibility for People with Disabilities on Adinegoro–Perintis Kemerdekaan Corridor, Medan City

Abstract

This study analyzes pedestrian accessibility for people with disabilities along the Adinegoro–Perintis Kemerdekaan Corridor in Medan City. The research analyzes the condition of sidewalks along the corridor, which often do not meet accessibility standards. The problems identified include inconsistent sidewalk width, uneven surfaces, absence of guiding blocks, excessive slopes in transition areas, and the use of sidewalk space for parking and street vendors, all of which reduce pedestrian movement space. Inadequate orientation facilities and weak supervision in public space management further hinder the mobility of people with disabilities. This study combines perspectives from architecture, urban planning, and environmental management to produce practical technical recommendations. Inclusive infrastructure development is a national priority to ensure mobility rights, yet people with disabilities in Indonesia still face spatial discrimination due to the failure of universal design standards. In Medan City, the Adinegoro–Perintis Kemerdekaan Corridor is a strategic area connecting educational and transportation functions, but its accessibility remains highly inadequate. The main issues are sharp elevation differences and the absence of proper ramps, forcing wheelchair users to make dangerous maneuvers onto the roadway. This condition is worsened by parking areas, street vendors, trees, and irregular utility placement that interrupt accessible pedestrian circulation.
