Abstract

This journal discusses the role of Mgr. Albertus Soegijapranata, SJ in defending Indonesia's independence after the proclamation of independence in 1945. Although Soegijapranata came from a minority group and is rarely mentioned in Indonesian revolution history, he was the first bishop appointed from the indigenous Indonesian population. In his role as a bishop, Soegijapranata sought to fully devote himself to the country and the nation in the hope of providing support for Indonesia's independence. He also played a role in gathering international support for Indonesian sovereignty through diplomatic efforts and writing. Soegijapranata's role not only had an impact on the country but also enhanced the image of the Catholic community, which was previously seen as supporters of the Netherlands. This research utilizes three theoretical perspectives, namely role, nationalism, and revolution, as analytical tools to uncover Soegijapranata's role in defending Indonesia's independence. The research methodology employed is a historical approach with historical analysis to reconstruct Soegijapranata's role in the physical revolution of 1945-1949. The research findings indicate that Soegijapranata played a significant role in defending Indonesia's independence through the relocation of the Catholic community's center of service to Yogyakarta, as well as diplomatic efforts and writing to gain international support. This study provides new insights into the role of minority figures in Indonesia's struggle for independence.
