Assessing the Effectiveness of International Organizations in Protecting the Wild Environment: A Legal Analysis of the Challenges and Reform Mechanisms
Abstract
The protection of the wild environment is drawing more and more attention due to the rapidly growing global environmental problems like; climate change, overfishing, and urban sprawl. This emphasizes necessity to enhance the role of international organizations in facing these risks. The present research will investigate the effectiveness of international organizations in safeguarding the wild environment through a study of the legal-institutional mechanisms they use, an assessment of their actual effectiveness, a diagnosis of the principal difficulties that hinder enforcement of international decisions at both international and national levels, and a proposal of practical measures to strengthen the role of international organizations in the protection of wild nature. The research adopts a descriptive, analytical, critical, and inductive method to analyze international treaties, review specialized literature; evaluate the power of international organizations in making and keeping the obligations of wild environment protection; point out weaknesses and problems; and suggest practical reform mechanisms to improve the effectiveness of these organizations. The study concludes that the threats to wild environments are still on the rise, despite the existence of a broad system of international agreements. The main gaps in implementation include limited resources and national capacities, inadequate institutional coordination among organizations, weak effective international enforcement tools, and a significant portion of commitments remaining in a formal framework that does not align with the seriousness of current environmental challenges. This requires practical legal and institutional reforms to enhance the effectiveness of international environmental governance, improve environmental compliance, and support the protection of the terrestrial environment, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal (13) on climate action and Goal (15) on life on land.
