ANTIBACTERIAL TEST OF BENALU LEAF EXTRACT (Dendrophthoe pentandra (L.)) Miq. ON VARIOUS HOST PLANTS ON GROWTH OF Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract


Abstract: Benalu (Dendrophthoe pentandra (L.) Miq. is a parasitic plant but has potential
as a medicinal plant. The peoples use it for traditional medicinal materials. This research
was conducted to find out the effect of benalu leaf extract that grow on various host plants
on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. The method was used Randomized Complete
Design (RAL) divided into four treatment and four repetition. The treatmen were used
benalu leaf extract on host plants of star fruit (Averrhoa bilimbi), ambarella fruit
(Spondias dulcis), lime (Citrus aurantiifolia) and aquades as control. The results of
phytochemical tests showed that parasitic extracts that grow on star fruit, ambarella and
lime contain antibacterial compounds such as alkaloids, saponins, tannins and flavonoids.
Based on the results of Anova test on the average inhibition zone diameter indicates that
the benalu leaf extract that grow on various host plants is very influential (P = 0,000) to
S. aureus. After the further test, it was found that the largest mean inhibition zone
diameter to S. aureus was benalu leaf extract of star fruit which was 19.25 mm and
significantly different from the parasite extract of ambarella (11 mm) and lime (14.5 mm).
The results of this study can be concluded that the benalu leaves grown in various hosts
can inhibit S. aureus
