An Integrated Ecological Architecture Framework: Synthesizing Contemporary Ecological Design Principles
Abstract
Climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation have intensified the need for ecological approaches in architectural design. However, existing studies primarily emphasize passive environmental strategies and have not systematically integrated recent ecological design paradigms into a comprehensive architectural framework. This study aims to develop an Integrated Ecological Architecture Framework through the synthesis of contemporary ecological architecture theories and its validation using an architectural design case study. A qualitative design research approach was employed through literature review, theory extraction, comparative synthesis, framework development, and design validation. The study proposes a framework consisting of six interrelated design dimensions: ecological literacy, environmental performance, life-cycle thinking, circular economy, nature-based design, and regenerative design. The validation demonstrates that the framework can be systematically translated into operational design parameters and architectural decision-making processes. The proposed framework provides a transferable conceptual model for environmentally responsive and sustainable architectural design.
