Abstract

Affective communication, particularly the expression of love or affection, is an important aspect of interpersonal relationships. The concept of love languages, introduced by Gary Chapman, identifies five primary forms of expressing love: words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service, and physical touch. Love languages influence individuals’ emotional relationships and social identities. This study aims to explore how Generation Z university students in Yogyakarta understand and practice love languages in their daily lives, as well as the factors influencing their preference for particular forms of love language. This research adopts a qualitative method with a case study approach. The researcher involved seven university students from seven private universities located in the city of Yogyakarta, aged between 19 and 25 years. The findings indicate that Generation Z students in Yogyakarta prioritize quality time and words of affirmation in romantic relationships and frequently use social media to express love. In non-romantic relationships, acts of service and gift-giving are more dominant.
