Socialization of the Use of Liquid Organic Fertilizer to Support Precision and Environmentally Friendly Agriculture for Inmates of Class IIB Penitentiary, Tasikmalaya

Abstract

Food security and fostering self-reliance are crucial issues in sustainable development, including in correctional institutions with limited land and resources. The use of environmentally friendly agricultural technology is a strategic approach to support the development and social reintegration of inmates. This community service program aims to improve inmates' skills and independence through outreach and training in the use of liquid organic fertilizer (POC) in hydroponic production systems. The program was conducted at the Class IIB Tasikmalaya Correctional Institution (Lapas) with 20 inmates participating. The implementation method included preparation, outreach, practical training, and monitoring and evaluation. The material covered the concepts of precision and sustainable agriculture, the characteristics of liquid organic fertilizer, techniques for producing POC using local microorganisms, and their application in small-scale hydroponic systems. The program results showed an increase in participants' understanding and skills in using POC, as reflected in pre- and post-program evaluations and active participation during the training. The application of POC in hydroponics has the potential to reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers, utilize internal prison organic waste, support food security, and foster self-reliance among inmates. This program has the potential to become a model for environmentally friendly, agriculture-based development that can be replicated in other correctional institutions.
