Abstract

Abstract: The paper aims at describing how refusal to be realized in wayang golek show. Refusal is realized with four, three, two, and one realization. The refusal realization is influenced by social distance, relative power, ranking of imposition, and personality character. Personality character of figure is prominence to have an influence on refusal and its realization. The personality character is not only important but also become a variable which determines in refusal. Therefore, personality character can be equalled with other variables such as: social distance (D), relative power (P), ranking of imposition (R). A direct refusal will be affected not only by social distance between speaker and addressee, relative power between speaker and addressee, ranking of imposition of an utterance, and personality character of figure as well. In regardless with a direct refusal, it is more direct realization in refusal so that it is more polite and it is more refusal realization that is applied by someone that why it is more polite in refusal. Therefore, the language politeness formula of Brown dan Levinson (1987) will change from Wₓ = D (S, H) + P (H, S) + Rₓ to Wₓ = D (S, H) + P (H, S) + Rₓ + C (H, S). The consequence is there is a change of language politeness theory which involves the importance of personality character variable. The research is conducted by applying descriptive-qualitative method with pragmatic approach. The data was taken from VCD wayang golek show of Trijaya Sakti, Sukma Sajati, Sayembara Dewi Kunti, Dorna Gugur, and Dawala Jadi Raja. Data collection was applied simak method.
