Abstract

Abstract:  This research is a critical discourse analysis study that analyzes 15 news texts about “The Breaking of the Wall of the Kartasura Palace” on solo.tribunnews.com with the Norman Fairclough approach. The stages of Norman Fairclough's version of critical discourse analysis are text analysis, discourse practice, and social practice. This research is a qualitative descriptive study and uses a listening and note-taking technique in collecting data. The findings from the analysis of the three stages of Norman Fairclough's version will produce: (1) the structure of the news text (title, orientation, sequences of events, and closing); (2) Discourse practices that provide information related to events, participants, correlations between events and participants involved, and the language functions contained in the news text, and (3) Social practices that will explain the socio-cultural situation at the time the text is produced, such as the motives of the perpetrators of breaking through are explained through the text, the condition of the people living inside the palace walls, and the responses of the institutions (the Surakarta palace, and the Sukoharjo Regency Government) based on the speeches presented in the texts of each related institution.
