Abstract

The purpose statement of the study is to find out  how significant is the effect of the teaching  and learning strategy toward students’ critical thinking of the biology department students of Genetics subject. The research design used in the study is quasi-experimental design. It is aimed at giving the real description of the effects of students’ critical thinking. The populations of the study are the two classes of (5th) fifth semester students of Biology Department of Muhammadiyah University of Jember. One class is treated as the experiment group which applied the combination of reading, questioning and answering strategy and think pair and share technique; and another one is of the controlled group. The results of the study show that: the average ability of the students in experiment group are higher than those of the controlled group in thinking critically. This shows the average scores fell in learning the TPS strategy combined RQA 8.7% higher compared to learning the TPS strategy. It can be concluded that the combined RQA TPS strategy can improve critical thinking skills of students in the 2012-2013 academic year genetics course.
