Synthesis of Iron Oxalate for Yellow Pigment

Abstract


Iron oxalate pigment has been used since the 19th century, where it was found in the textile dyeing industry. This use then expanded to the paint and ink industry because this pigment is able to provide a long-lasting yellow color and is stable to light and heat. The synthesis of iron oxalate is an important chemical process in the chemical industry to produce iron complex compounds that have various applications, including as a raw material in pigment production. This experiment aims to synthesize iron oxalate through the reaction between iron(II) sulfate (FeSO4) solution and oxalic acid (H2C2O4) solution, and to calculate the resulting pigment yield. The method used in this experiment is the precipitation method. In this experiment, the pigment yields obtained were 0.6106; 0.980; 0.5211. Different pigment yields are caused by variations in reagents, time, reaction temperature, and separation and purification conditions.
