Abstract

Alcoholysis of kapuk seed oil with ethanol produce glycerol and esther that having more expensive. The objectives of this research were to determine the mass transfer coefficient and effect of reaction temperature and percentage of catalyst weight to glycerol conversion. The experiments were conducted using a batch reactor equipped with stirrer and heater. The catalyst was NaOH solution. The result showed that the reaction was pseudo first order with respect to oil concentration. Increasing the reaction temperature and percentage of catalyst weight increased the rate constant of alcoholysis. The rate costant of oil alcoholysis was related to the reaction temperature by : k = (5,468) e (-l.27J,9/T) This equation was valid for the temperature range between 40 and BO 'C. In addition, it was only valid for the speed of agitation 800 rpm, ratio feed 1,5 ml etanollml oil, ratio weight of catalyst and oil 0, 8%. The rate costant of oil alcoholysis was related to the ratio weight of catalyst and oil by: k = -0, 0271 P 2 + 0, 0434 P - 0, 0096 This equation was valid for the ratio weight of catalyst and oil range between 0, 5 % and 0, 9 %. In addition, it was only valid for temperatue of 70 'C, the speed of agitation 700 rpm and ratio feed 1,5 ml etanol/ml oil
