Abstract

Sorption to non-living Sargassum sp. Algae is a promising technology for removal of dissolved heavy metal fraction in aqueous solution waste industry. The reasons to this fact were due to the availability this material in Indonesia and economic considerations. Many experiments has used this material to remove heavy metal solution but less of them was carried out in continuous processes which is usually done in industry. The objective of this work was to study the effect of pH solutions and flow rate upon adsorption of metal ions (Cr2+) from aqueous solutions. Non-living algae biomass was used as adsorbents filled on fixed bed column. This experiment was done in a glass column of 2.5 cm diameter with 4 cm height of the packed bed of adsorbents. The heavy metal solution with specific concentration was introduced at the top of the column. Samples were drawn at the bottom of the column in several times and the remaining metal concentrations were measured with AAS. The results show that pH solutions have slightly effect to mass transfer coefficient (kc) and axial diffusivity (Dz), otherwise the flowrate had significant effect to axial diffusivity (Dz). The effect of flow rate (Uz) upon mass transfer coefficient (kc) and axial diffusivity (Dz) can be expressed in the following equation, with relative error 3.85 %
