Abstract

Viscous fluids are often found in many chemical processes. These fluids show a deviation from Newton's law of viscosity and called non-Newtonian fluid. In this research, syrup has been treated as viscous fluid, and the characteristic of the flow has been studied. Research was conducted by flowing the syrup on a horizontally circular pipe with gravity force. At steady state the pressure drops were observed by measuring the difference height of fluid in manometer. Pressure drops were used to calculate the shear stresses and the shear rates were calculated by using the Rabinowitch's equation. It was found that the syrup was follows the Otswald-de Waele model, eventhough it can be assumed as Newtonian fluid for simplification. Key words : syrup, non Newtonian, shear stress, shear rate.
