Abstract
In simulation problems, the distillation coloumn has been built and we wish to predict how much separation can be achieved for a given feed. Since the distillation cotoumn has already been built, the number of stage, the feed stage location and the desired composition of more volatile component in the distillate are already specified. The objectives of this research are to determine overall plate efficiency, the external reflux ratio and the maximum side stream rate that will produce this separation. The case study observed is coloumn distillation at PT Karbometil Selulosa. A steady state, countercurrent, staged distillation coloumn with open steam and one side stream is to be used to separate ethanol from water. The McCabe Thiele method is used to calculate the number of stage. It is found that in the operating conditions applied, the over all plate efficiency is 69.86%, the external reflux ratio is 1.33, and the maximum side stream rate is 23.25 Kmo/h.
