PENINGKATAN KUALITAS BIODIESEL DARI ASAM LEMAK JENUH MINYAK BIJI KARET DENGAN PROSES HIDROLISIS

Abstract

Rubber seed is an Indonesia’s potential feedstock for biodiesel. Indonesia is one of the biggest rubber producers in Asia. Recently, rubber seed is just thrown away from the tree and being useless waste. Biodiesel consist of methyl ester compound which can be produced from both vegetable oil and fatty acids. This work produces biodiesel from rubber seed oil’s saturated fatty acids. The aim of this research were for changing useless waste to be alternative diesel fuel, and comparing the properties’ quality of both kind of biodiesel (from rubber seed oil and saturated fatty acids). Fatty acids were obtained from vegetable oil hydrolysis. The reaction was multi stages on its boiling point. The hydrolysis products were saturated and unsaturated fatty acids which were separated by chilling. Then, the saturated fatty acids (palmitic and stearic acids) were esterified with methanol on hydrochloric acid catalyst. Biodiesel properties were tested to get the specific gravity, kinematic viscosity, flash point, pour point, Conradson Carbon Residue (CCR), iodine number, acid number and cetane number in ASTM Standards. It concluded that biodiesel from saturated fatty acids has good quality on cetane number, iodine number, acid number, kinematic viscosity and pour point.
