Abstract

Based on the increasing of energy requirement, the world biodiesel-demand will rise. The Indonesian production-capacity was 2.5% of total national requirement in 2006. One of the reasons is using edible oil as feedstock. Exploration of new crops and unexploited oil crops is needed to develop. Rubber seed is a potential feedstock for biodiesel in case of its high proportion of oil. By using a proper pretreatment, we could produce high quality biodiesel. A two-step trans-esterification process was developed to convert the oil to methyl esters (biodiesel). The first step, acid pre-treatment using HCl, H2SO4 dan H3PO4 on 2,5% v/v as catalyst on the ratio of methanol to oil is 6 : 1, 60oC in 2 hours . The second step, alkaline (KOH) catalyzed trans-esterification was processed in 1 hour, 2% catalyst, 50oC, on the ratio of methanol to oil is 6 : 1.The biodiesel characteristics were analyzed and compared to biodiesel produced from crude rubber seed oil. The important properties of biodiesel such as specific gravity, kinematic viscosity, flash point, and pour point were found out and matched to Indonesian National Standard (SNI), except the Carbon residue, which higher than the standard.
