Abstract

Carbon from rice husk is an alternative choice for removal of dissolved heavy metal fraction Cr(VI) in aqueous solutions. This is an interesting material due to the availability in Indonesia and the economic considerations. To enhaced the sorption capacity, carbon was activated by chemical solutions. The objective of this experiment was to study the activation effect by ZnCl2 solutions upon the sorption capacity. The activation process was done by two methods. The first methods was carbon activation by submerging in ZnCl2 solutions for a day. The second was done by heating in ZnCl2 solution at 100 oC for an hour. ZnCl2 concentrations was variated by 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. The activated carbon was tested for Cr(VI) adsorption. The result showed that the activation had enhanced sorption Cr(VI) to rice husk carbon. The activated carbon by first method treatment could adsorp 95.6 % Cr(VI) from solutions and the activated carbon by second method treatment could adsorpt 87.7% Cr(VI) from solutions.
