Agama dalam Novel Nh. Dini La Barka: Sebuah Telaah Stilistika Feminis

Mytha Candria, Sumarlam Sumarlam

Abstract

Abstract:  This paper concerns the representation of religion in Nh. Dini’s novel entitled La Barka (2010). The study of the representation of is conducted within Sara Mill’s Feminist Stylistics (1995), whose main focus is to uncover gender bias in literary and non-literary texts and to show to the readers how gender bias is encoded in language. SF offers a model of communication in which the contexts of text production and reception are of equal importance in the process of interpreting a text. SF also considers readers to be playing a central role in text interpretation process. This research is qualitative in nature because the data are plural and cannot be interpreted out of context. The data were analysed semantically to uncover Dini’s attitude(s) towards religion, and they were also read using transitivity analysis to figure out the activities conducted by the novel actors and their positions: whether they are agents or themes. Religion (the Catholic Church) is represented as a patriarchal institution, whose leaders (fathers) privilege men over women. Some religious people are portrayed as hypocrites, since they do good deeds in churches but not in their daily life.
