Abstract

Abstract: Metaphors have been used in all aspects of language life. Metaphors are used for reasons of facilitating understanding, reinforcing meaning / impression, and conceptualizing something abstract to be more real and close to the reader. This study uses the analytical method proposed by Knowles and Moon, which is analyzing metaphors by identifying the vehicle (metaphor), topic (meaning), and grounds (relevance) elements. The research data analyzed were headlines in the Kompas newspaper, Thursday, July 16, 2020. The results showed that there were 18 headlines from 39 major headlines containing metaphors. The amount is equal to 46%. The metaphors used are ontological metaphors, structural metaphors, and orientational metaphors. Ontological metaphors are the most widely used, followed by structural metaphors, then orientational metaphors.
