Abstract

Abstract: Hedging expressions have been widely studied in various fields. In previous research, hedging expressions are used in utterances of politeness or expression of doubt in conveying ideas. However, previous research is still limited to research in the academic scope, speeches, newspaper articles, literary art. This article discusses the results of an investigation the forms of hedging expressions that exist in a humorous of lanji from the humour story typical of Banjar, South Kalimantan. A pragmatic approach is used in this qualitative study to analyze the forms of hedging from the utterances produced by the main characters in the story. Objective data is collected through purposive sampling. The results show that hedging expressions contribute to the humour element produced by the main characters in the Si Palui story. Thus, hedging expressions are considered as expressions used to convey ideas of uncertainity or politeness strategy, but this research provides new findings that these expressions also influence the element of humour that is mandated to the reader even implicitly.
