Abstract

Euphemism and dysphemism are frequently used expression in news writing. These kinds of writing style are believed to enable the writers, in a specific pragmatic situation, to attenuate or, in contrary, to reinforce a certain forbidden reality (Gomez, 2009: 738). Using this kind of expressions, the news writers are able to express the information in an interesting way. Besides, euphemism and dysphemism are also a means of showing people’s opinion towards a certain reality. This research is trying to know how such expressions translated from English into Indonesian whereas an expression which is euphemistic or dysphemistic in one society might not be euphemistic or dysphemistic in another society. Therefore, 20 BBC online news texts in English and their translation in Indonesian have been collected to be discussed. The euphemistic and dysphemistic expressions are, then, identified from those texts. There are found 156 euphemistic and dysphemistic expressions in those texts. To ensure that the expressions in English and Indonesian identified are truly euphemistic or dysphemistic, the validation from a British and Indonesian native speakers are needed. The result of the analysis indicates that 34 out of the 156 expressions are translated by shifting the kind of expression. The expressions analysed are all in the form of words and clauses. The result of the analysis shows that 13,5% English euphemism are translated into dysphemism and 8,3% English dysphemism are translated into euphemism. Established equivalent technique is mostly used in shifting euphemistic and dysphemistic expressions. The translator’s decision of using the technique has reduced the deep meaning of those expressions. As the result, the translation quality also decreases.
