KRITIK SOSIAL DALAM MEME BAHASA BALI

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the Balinese language used in meme in the social media. The use of Balinese language in meme has some functions and one of the functions is to deliver social critic. Balinese language has limited speakers that are Balinese people who recognize and understand the Balinese language and culture. For that reason, the realities in the society of Balinese people can be represented as meme nowadays. This definitely shows the relation between language and culture as conveyed by Wardhaugh (1986). Wardhaugh said the relation between understanding of a language of specific culture in certain society. Therefore, there would be certain interpretation to the used expressions. The data of this paper was taken from internet and it was classified based on the meme containing social critic. Method of collecting data was documentation method with techniques of reading in detail and classifying the data of meme. Meanwhile, method of analyzing data was descriptive qualitative. The chosen data of meme was analyzed to describe the social critic in its expressions. Result shows that meme with Balinese language has important role in delivering social critics. The interpretation of the meme is related to the connotative and denotative meanings of expression in meme. In general, meme conveys critics to the reality in unique way especially in those verbal and visual expressions.
