THE ABILITY IN TRANSLATING JAVANESE CULTURAL EXPRESSIONS INTO ENGLISH OF THE ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PGRI SEMARANG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2015/2016

Abstract

The objectives of the study are to know the students’ ability in translating Javanese cultural expressions into English before and after they read the book of Translation Guidance of the Javanese Cultural Expressions into English. This study is descriptive quantitative study. The subject of the study was the sixth semester students of the English Education Department of University of PGRI Semarang in the academic year 2015/2016. The instrument used in the study was test. The test was given before and after the students read the book. Thus, test was used in collecting the data, and it was analyzed using quantitative analysis. The results of the study show that 1) the score of the students’ ability in translating Javanese Cultural Expressions into English before they read the book of Translation Guidance of Javanese Cultural Expressions into English is 1,454, and it can be categorized less accurate, less acceptable, and less readable; 2) the score of the students’ ability in translating Javanese Cultural Expressions into English after they read the book of Translation Guidance of Javanese Cultural Expressions into English is 1,816, and it can be categorized less accurate, less acceptable, and less readable; and 3) the result of t-test is 4,235813574, so there is any significant difference of the students’ ability in translating Javanese Cultural Expressions into English before and after they read the book of Translation Guidance of Javanese Cultural Expressions into English. It can be concluded that the book of Translation Guidance of Javanese Cultural Expressions has good influence towards students’ ability in translating Javanese Cultural expressions into English though the results of the students’ translation are still less accurate, less acceptable, and less readable.
