Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to develop a set of instructional design, we call it Local Instruction Theory (LIT), of solving quadratic equation based on geometric approach that involving the history of mathematics. In addition, we will describe about how the geometric approach can help students in understanding the concept of solving quadratic equations. This research was conducted at SMPN 1 Krian, Sidoarjo city, Indonesia. The research method used in this research is design research which consists of three main stages, namely preliminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. The instructional activities designed to achieve the goal in this research consists of several activities, namely doing a geometric manipulation to solve the problem, Using Babylonian geometry method to solve the problem, and linking the geometry problem with the current algebraic form. From the result of the pilot experiment, in general students can understand the idea of solving quadratic equation through geometry manipulation. However, we found that students with low mathematical ability meet difficulties in achieving the learning objectives until the last activity we designed.

Keywords:Quadratic Equation; History of Mathemaics; Local Instruction Theory; Babylonian Approach.
