FROM ROMANCE TO POWER RELATIONS: EXPERIENCES OF METROSEXUAL STUDENTS AT SEMARANG STATE UNIVERSITY IN FINDING PARTNERS AND RELATIONSHIP

Abstract

Metrosexuality is recognized as a new model of masculinity. The term metrosexual refers to men who are highly conscious of their appearance and lifestyle, and who express interest in products and services traditionally associated with women. Metrosexual men are relatively easy to encounter jn Semarang, as amenities that support personal grooming are widely available. This study aims to explore metrosexual men's perspectives on masculinity and their reasons for adopting a metrosexual identity in the modern era. The study employs a qualitative research method using Alfred Schutz’s phenomenological approach, and the data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, further supported by a literature review on previous journal articles relevant to the research topic. Adopting a phenomenological approach, the researcher seeks to gain a deeper understanding of individuals’ subjective experiences and the meanings they attribute to the metrosexual phenomenon. The findings indicate that metrosexual masculinity among students at Semarang State University is driven by a desire to attract a partner and to gain appreciation from those around them. These individuals enjoy grooming themselves in ways traditionally associated with women, such as using skincare and body care products and regularly visiting beauty clinics. However, it is important to note that they still adhere to their biological gender roles, in other words, metrosexuality does not pertain to one's sexual orientation, but rather to a lifestyle, a set of behaviors, and personal preferences related to appearance, fashion, and self-care. This transformation extends beyond physical changes, encompassing shifts in attitude that reflect underlying power relations.
