Abstract
Indonesia has various industries. Some industries require materials to improve the quality of the products produced. CuSO4.5H2O crystals are one of the materials that are widely needed in industry. CuSO4.5H2O crystals are made from scrap copper or copper in the form of sponge obtained from CuCl2 solution. Copper waste is processed into pigments using the hydrometallurgical method. Pigments are natural substances that produce color, namely unexplored optical properties. Hydrometallurgy is a metal extraction process carried out at relatively low temperatures by leaching using chemical solutions. This research generally aims to study how to make CuSO4.5H2O crystals from scrap copper (Cu) coils and H2SO4 with HNO3 solvent. In its implementation, the process of making CuSO4.5H2O crystals goes through the stages of dissolving Cu material with HNO3, the reaction stage with H2SO4, and the crystallization stage to obtain CuSO4.5H2O crystals. The weight of the moolooite blue pigment obtained for Experiment 1: 6.24 grams, Experiment 2: 8.27 grams. Then the yield obtained in experiment 1: 0.390 grams of pigment/gram CuSO4, Experiment 2: 0.518 grams of pigment/gram CuSO4. The conversion obtained in Experiment 1: 60.90%, Experiment 2: 48.18%. The pigment results obtained using this method can be further applied in industry, because the conversion results obtained are quite high.
